Rare LARGE WWI Springfield Armory Bolo Machete, Dated 1914DESCRIPTION:
Original WWI Springfield Armory Bolo style machete. Scans show it all. Heavy blade is in very good condition, with only minor surface rust and wear as shown. Dated 1914 at the throat, along with "S A" and "US". Also serial #37730.
Wooden grips are in excellent condition. Nice wooden finger shaped contours to help to grip it tightly. Heavy brass rivets hold the grips on to the tang. Also a hole at the end to enable a line to hold it on the belt or to help keep it on the wrist. Served as a very effective side knife and machete, especially in wooded or otherwise uneven ground and growth. Measures 17 1/4" overall with a 12" blade. 4 1/2" brass crossguard and 2 1/2" wide at the front of its rounded blade.
No scabbard, but the few of these I have seen also did not have scabbards. I believe they were a fabric material and took significant beating during use.
This is a great looking, unusual design AND A NICE WWI CAMP & BATTLEFIELD ITEM. Very typical of some of the new equipment ideas used during WWI. Looks great in any WWI collection and would look great mounted with other conventional WWI knives and bayonets.
