    Description

WWI m.1917 Bayonet and Scabbard, cut down and shortened in
    length
A m.1917 bayonet with scabbard that has been cut down in length. Measures about 15 inches overall, blade is about 10 inches. These bayonets were for the U.S. m.1917 rifle which was abandoned after the First World War in favor of the 1903 Springfield. Some of these bayonets were used by other countries or shortened into fighting knifes. Some lived on as a bayonet for the U.S. trench shotgun.
This one's blade was cut in to a bowie style and shows evidence of some sharpening long ago. So a good guess is that it was made into a fighting knife. Has a very nice wood grip handle, latch button functions well. Remington 1917 and inspectors ordnance markings. Scabbard has brass hanger hook, was shortened at the throat end, tip is now missing.
Overall nice solid condition once was a good looking bayonet. Too bad it was altered.
